National Marine Week 2017

National Marine Week 2017
National Marine Week 2017

This year National Marine Week launches on the 22nd of July. Each year the Wildlife Trusts nationally celebrates local sea animals and plants during National Marine Week.

The United Kingdom has a variety of marine species including dolphins, whales and giant squids– it is not necessary to travel abroad to encounter such fascinating species. However, these marine species and habitats are threatened from overfishing, man-made destruction and climate change. As highlighted by The Plastic Ocean Foundation, 1 in 3 species of marine mammals have been found entangled in marine litter. Sadly, in the last 15 years the amount of litter on our beaches has almost doubled.

National Marine Week generates a greater understanding and appreciation of the UK thriving coastal waters. The Wildlife Trusts will host various activities and events throughout the country – browse the Wildlife Trusts pages for things to do. If your hotel is located near the British coasts why not join Norfolk Wildlife Trust for rockpool rummaging and beach clean or attend the Living Seas events alongside Yorkshire coastline during National Marine Week.

If you cannot attend the Wildlife Trusts events during National Marine Week, there are still ways you can make a positive impact all year round: refer to the Wildlife Trusts’ ‘How you can help’ list. The recommendations include buying seasonal and locally caught fish. The Marine Conservation Society provides a good fish guide to help you choose sustainable fish all year round. Also, you can use environmentally friendly detergents to eliminate toxic pollutants from entering and destroying the marine environment. If you wish to receive information about eco-friendly detergents suppliers, get in touch with Considerate Hoteliers.
