How is the United Kingdom addressing energy management? The United Kingdom Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) awarded £8.8 million to 9 innovation projects to develop software tools that can use smart meter data encouraging small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to save energy.
The UK Government strategy derives from research suggesting SMEs within the hospitality, retail and education sectors use the same amount of energy as 43 million homes in the UK. Consumption could be reduced by one quarter with more efficient practices. The strategy has even greater groundings as a recent study by the University of Sydney found global tourism accountable for 8% of carbon emissions, around 3 times greater than previous estimates. Hospitality SMEs are a great target to address reductions in energy consumption and carbon emissions.
