In August 2019, two hotels, a hostel and a pub became testers for Fluttr – Considerate Group’s new energy management app for SMEs in the hospitality sector. Over the subsequent months these businesses saw their combined electricity consumption drop considerably. As a result of following our tips and acting on their personalised electricity usage data, provided by Fluttr, these businesses were able to become more energy efficient.
In the first week of using Fluttr, the four businesses used an average of 439kWh of electricity per day. This level of usage would generate as much CO2 as burning 129lbs of coal. However, by the end of November the businesses’ combined electricity usage had dropped by 28% to an average of 317kWh per day across the week.
When comparing these businesses’ initial energy use to the most recent data received (August-November), we have seen an average reduction of 122kWh per day. If this was replicated over the course of the year, each site would see considerable savings. In fact, we estimate that across the year, the two hotels would save £1,824.30 and £742.74 respectively, the pub would save £1,635.44, and the hostel would save £2,709.71 (based on an average UK electricity tariff).
The combined improvement of these four sites, if constant for a full year, would save enough electricity to power 14 average medium-sized UK homes. This would consequently reduce their joint emissions by 12,531kg CO2e – the equivalent of planting and growing 209 trees for 10 years.
