Since our winter news bulletin in January, the Considerate Hoteliers team has remained focused on its core purpose of helping our members and clients to pave their own road to sustainable hospitality, without allowing ourselves to be distracted by the whirlwind of geopolitical affairs. Leading, innovating and challenging.
In support of UNWTO’s International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development (#IY2017), Considerate Hoteliers has dedicated 2017 to driving the agenda around waste. This is because waste affects so many of our hotel’s and destination’s businesses daily. Food waste represents a huge cost and challenge to hotels in cities. Resorts, impacted by plastic waste, are left struggling with dirty beaches as well as having to find ways to dispose of the plastic waste responsibly – not an easy task! But thankfully the world has seen the launch of the Plastic Stewardship Council, supported by the Prince of Wales, the Ellen Macarthur Foundation and many international corporations. We will keep you updated on the latest projects, developments and initiatives coming from that Council on our blog, Twitter, LinkedIn, and in the summer news bulletin.
One other important piece of news is that we have a new chairman at Considerate Hoteliers, this month. John Firrell MIH has stepped down. We wave him good-bye with enormous gratitude! John has dedicated over 25 years to Considerate Hoteliers, pouring his heart and soul into growing the membership, furthering the message as well as inspiring many hoteliers to embrace a responsible business agenda. We are thrilled to announce that Professor Graham Miller, who holds a chair in sustainability in business at the University of Surrey and is Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, is our new chairman. We are extremely proud to have him on board and look forward to exciting times ahead.
