The focus of this year’s World Environment Day was mainly on plastic pollution. Given that this a topical environmental problem, as it pollutes our beautiful nature and our wildlife worldwide as well as affecting our health. A myriad of actions were undertaken on the day, from the Government of India committing to ban all single-use plastics by 2022, to pledges to tackle plastic pollution stated by Unilever, Coca-Cola, International Olympic Committee, to name but a few.

The travel and tourism industry is also taking action. On World Environment Day Athens International Airport (AIA) launched ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ campaign to limit use of plastics in the airport. Hilton released its latest sustainability report stating its efforts to move away from plastic straws and bottles to ultimately half its environmental impact by 2030. The Travel Corporation (TTC) has imposed an immediate ban on more than 60 types of single-use plastic items in its 40 global offices. TTC has also committed to eliminating single-use plastics across its worldwide portfolio of 29 travel and tourism brands by 2022.

Considerate Hoteliers has experienced a surge of interest from its clientele on how to beat plastic pollution. The team has developed tailored services to replace all plastic items in a hotel’s operation. This includes an initial supply chain and property audit, to identify all plastic items found in each department of a hotel.
